How to use these pages
Read a pattern, then read the examples out loud — the pinyin sits under each word, so you can sound out anything you do not recognise. The examples use vocabulary from HSK 1–3, and every word links to the word lists and the character pages, so you can check the tone of a word rather than guess it.
Patterns are worth more than vocabulary when you are starting out: a handful of them (是……的、比、把、虽然……但是……) covers a surprisingly large share of everyday sentences. When you have read one, try it in a graded passage or a practice round.
