Chinese to Pinyin Converter

Paste any Chinese text and get the pinyin of every word, with tone marks. Readings are looked up per word, not per character — so 银行 comes out yín háng and not yín xíng. Click any word to hear it, fix a reading, or save it to your study list.

Why word-level readings matter

A character's reading is decided by the word it sits in. 行 is xíng in 行走 but háng in 银行; 长 is cháng in 很长 but zhǎng in 长大. Converters that read character by character get these wrong, which is exactly the part learners cannot check for themselves.

We match the longest word in our 11,470-word HSK dictionary first and only fall back to the single-character reading when a word is not in it. Out-of-dictionary text is where any tool gets shaky — so every word here is clickable and can be corrected on the spot.

What you can do with the result

  • Hear a word

Recorded by a native voice wherever we have a recording, with your browser's voice as the fallback.

  • Fix a reading

Type the correct pinyin for one word — it changes that spot only, never every occurrence of the same word.

  • Save it to your study list

Saved words enter the spaced-repetition queue on /study, so the words you looked up come back later.

  • Turn it into typing practice

One click sends the whole passage — pinyin and all — to the typing studio.

Common questions

How does this converter know which reading to use?
The reading of a Chinese character depends on the word it is in — 行 is xíng in 行走 but háng in 银行. So we look up the longest match in our 11,470-word HSK dictionary first and only fall back to the single-character reading when a word is not in it.
What happens with text that is not in the dictionary?
It falls back to the character-by-character reading, and a polyphonic character can come out wrong. That is why every word is clickable: type the right reading into “Wrong reading?” and it is corrected just for that spot.
Can I practise the text afterwards?
Yes — “Practice in Typing” hands the whole passage to the typing studio with the pinyin already worked out, so you can type it character by character or by pinyin. Words you save go into your study list and come back on a spaced-repetition schedule.
Does it work offline or send my text anywhere?
The conversion runs entirely in your browser with a dictionary the page downloads once, so the text you paste is never uploaded. Audio is played from our recordings when we have one and from your browser voice otherwise.
