Start here

Three steps, in the order they work best — each one links straight to the page you need.

  1. Step 1

    Sounds first

Pinyin is Mandarin written with Latin letters: 21 initials, 36 finals and four tones. Learn it before anything else — in Chinese the tone decides the meaning.

  2. Step 2

    Then characters and words

Every character is drawn stroke by stroke, and most words are two characters long. Look up either one as you meet it — both pages carry pinyin, audio and examples.

  3. Step 3

    Then practise

Short drills that tell you what you got wrong: listen and choose the word, read with pinyin on every word, or type what you hear. Save your mistakes to the study list.
